Our Story
Inspired by the
village toddy shops
of Sri Lanka.
Hopper began on Frith Street in Soho in 2015 — a small, loud room that smelled of coconut oil and black pepper. The idea was simple: cook Sri Lankan and South Indian street food the way it tastes in the roadside stalls of Colombo and Jaffna, not the way a Western kitchen imagines it.
The menu is built around the hopper — a bowl-shaped crêpe of fermented rice and coconut milk that you crack open at the table. Everything else exists to eat with it, on it, or beside it. Karis, pol sambol, seeni sambol, lamprais sealed in banana leaf. Real food, eaten with your hands.
Feeding the Future: Since 2022, we have raised over £350,000 for preschool children and families in Sri Lanka's poorest districts, in partnership with Hemas Outreach Foundation.
